Cindy got some pretty nasty looking welts from the jellyfish encounter, but taking an antihistamine and washing the area with vinegar removed all signs by this morning. Prevalent in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Carribean, and along both the east and west coasts of the United States during the summer months, sea lice are probably the most commonly encountered stinging threat to divers and swimmers at the beach. Sea lice are actually the microscopic larvae of jellyfish and other ocean stingers which contain the same nematocysts (stinging cells) as mommy and daddy. In many areas of the Gulf and Caribbean the primary culprit causing "sea lice" infestations is the larvae of the thimble jellyfish. These larvae, sometimes half a millimeter in length or smaller, can become trapped between the bathing suit and skin or in crevices like the armpit and compressed, causing the stinging cells to fire. We arrived here in Phnom Penh after an 8 hour bus trip from Saigon and took a Tuk Tuk to the lakeside area which is a bit of a backpacker place. Got a room in Green Lake Guesthouse for $7 which seemed OK even though it had a bit of a hole in the roof but the drips were in the corner so we didn't mind too much! That turned out not to be the main problem with this room as we were soon to find out... Anyway we had a really nice meal in a cafe nearby and relaxed on our first night in Cambodia. It seemed a cool place, much poorer than neighbouring countries. There were a lot of poor looking people, rubbish dumped at roadsides and the roads were full of holes, yet there were a lot of really big new 4x4 trucks, Lexus cars and a few jaguars on the streets. Our son Austin's eczema has since cleared up and we are weaning him off of the Dr.'s cream. We were told he would likely grow out of it by age 2 and he is 8 months now so we are grateful for his healing and thank God and our family for praying for him. I should note that after trying many creams, lotions, etc. - the only thing that worked was the 1% hydrocortisone cream and 2.5% for the trouble spots (back of knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, cheeks). Wearing long sleeve shirts and pants to limit scratching also helps though you must be careful not to get to hot.
